What dogs are at high risk for heat stroke?

While all dogs have the risk of experiencing a heat stroke on extremely hot days, there are certain breeds of dogs that have a higher risk of experiencing it than others. This is why some dog parents need to take extra precautions if their dog falls into such a category. Apart from just breeds of the dog, being overweight and the dog’s age also play important factors in determining such risk. If the dog is too old or overweight, they are more likely to get a heat stroke.

Which breeds are not made for hot weather?

The breeds which have a higher risk of getting a heat stroke are as follows:

1. Chow chow
2. Bulldog
3. French bulldog
4. Dogue de Bordeaux
5. Greyhound
6. Cavalier King Charles spaniel
7. Golden retriever
8. Pug
9. Springer Spaniel

If your dog falls in any of the breeds mentioned above or if they are overweight/ old, then you must know what the symptoms of a heat stroke are. 

Only if you know the symptoms will you be able to identify them and take action accordingly. For example, flat-faced dogs such as pugs and bulldogs have a higher risk of getting a heat stroke as the capacity level of their breathing is compromised by the shape of their skulls. 

Hence, they need to be able to breathe properly and require open rooms. Apart from this, pure dog breeds also have a higher risk of getting a heat stroke than cross/ mix breeds.

However, irrespective of the breed and other factors, if you are a dog parent, you should keep an eye on your dog, especially on days with extremely high temperatures. Make sure to keep your dog hydrated and in areas with complete ventilation.

Moreover, exercising on days with high temperatures is extremely harmful to the dogs. So dog parents must take all necessary precautions to avoid this fatal situation for their dogs.

If your dog has an underlying health problem, then excessive movement can be fatal as their breathing rate drops, and the high temperatures would only make it more difficult for them to keep cool during the hot days. 

If you notice any sign of a heat stroke, then don’t take that lightly. Try to bring the dog’s body temperature back to normal before things worsen.
