This Dog “Broke” 6 DNA Tests - What Made Dante So Unique?

How does one dog make six DNA tests come back without the normal answers?

That was the mystery surrounding Dante, a rescue dog found in the middle of a Kentucky road. After he was adopted by Kami Neihoff, questions about his unknown past—and particularly his unusual coat eventually led her to try a consumer dog DNA test.

One failed. Then another. Then another.

Switching testing companies did not solve the puzzle. Neither did replacing cheek-swab samples with a blood sample. By the sixth unsuccessful attempt, the question was no longer simply, What breeds make up Dante? It was, What is going on with his DNA?

The answer turned out to be far more unusual than a surprising breed mix.

She works as a dog groomer and told The Dodo that Dante's coat was unlike others she had encountered. She wanted to understand both his coat and what genetic information might reveal about a dog whose history she didn't know.

A dog breed DNA test seemed like a reasonable place to start.

Instead of revealing Dante's ancestry, however, it deepened the mystery.

The First Dog DNA Test Failed - Then Two More Did Too

According to Neihoff's account to The Dodo, she initially tested Dante through Embark.

The first attempt failed to produce the expected result. Embark then provided two additional tests, but those attempts failed as well. The company ultimately refunded her.

At this stage, three unsuccessful samples might have been enough for many pet parents to stop.

Neihoff kept looking.

She turned to Wisdom Panel, another consumer canine genetics service. According to The Dodo, two attempts there also failed.

Five tests. Still no ordinary breed result.

And there was one more option to try.

Even a Blood Sample Didn't Solve the Mystery

The next attempt was different.

Rather than relying on another standard cheek-swab sample, The Dodo reported that Dante was taken to a veterinarian for a blood draw.

The blood-based attempt failed too.

That brought Dante's total to six unsuccessful DNA-testing attempts: three reported attempts through Embark, followed by two Wisdom Panel attempts and then the blood-based test.

This is where the phrase that Dante "broke six DNA tests" needs some clarification.

The Surprise Answer: Dante Was Reported to Be a Chimera

According to Neihoff's account, the analysis indicated that Dante is a chimera.

The term may sound like something from mythology, but chimerism is a real biological phenomenon.

The University of California, Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory defines chimerism as a condition in which an animal has cells containing two distinct genomes. One way this can happen is when two embryos fuse during early pregnancy.

Wisdom Panel similarly explains that chimerism can occur when two embryos fuse early in development, producing one animal containing two distinct sets of genetic material.

In very simplified terms, imagine two genetic starting points that would normally have developed separately becoming incorporated into a single developing animal.

The resulting dog isn't "two dogs" in the everyday sense. It is one individual whose body contains genetically different populations of cells.

That distinction is what makes Dante's unusual dog DNA story so fascinating.

What Does It Mean for a Dog to Have Two Sets of DNA?

Most of us intuitively think of an individual as having one genetic identity throughout the body.

Chimerism complicates that picture.

A chimera can contain cells derived from two genetically distinct embryos. Depending on how those cells are distributed, different tissues may contain different genetic profiles.

There is documented evidence of this phenomenon in dogs.

UC Davis highlights the case of "Tiger," a Labrador Retriever with an unusual black-and-yellow coat. Genetic testing of hairs from differently colored areas revealed different genotypes, supporting chimerism. Researchers considered fusion of embryos early in development the likely explanation.

Importantly, a chimera dog does not necessarily look unusual. UC Davis specifically notes that chimerism is not always apparent from an animal's appearance.

So a striking coat may sometimes prompt genetic investigation, but appearance alone cannot establish that a dog is a chimera.

Why Could Chimerism Make a Dog DNA Test Fail?

This is where Dante's experience lines up with an interesting problem already recognized in canine genetic testing.

Embark has published an explanation of how DNA genotyping can sometimes produce unusual data. It specifically identifies chimerism as one possible explanation when repeated samples from the same dog produce certain abnormal intensity patterns. Embark also notes that the distribution of chimeric cells can vary between tissues.

That last point matters.

A cheek swab collects cells from the mouth. A blood sample examines cells circulating in blood. If genetically different cell populations are present, the resulting data may not behave like the straightforward single-individual genetic profile a testing system ordinarily expects.

According to The Dodo's report, the explanation Neihoff received was that Dante's two genetic sets prevented the testing systems from separating his data in a way that could provide the expected breed result.

It is more accurate, therefore, to say Dante's unusual genetic profile reportedly interfered with obtaining a standard result than to suggest he somehow literally "broke" six tests.

Is Canine Chimerism Rare?

Chimerism is certainly unusual enough to attract scientific interest, but putting an exact number on how often it occurs in dogs would go beyond the available evidence.

Embark notes that researchers do not yet know exactly how common chimerism is in dogs.

That uncertainty is important.

Cases may be difficult to notice because a dog does not necessarily have a visibly divided coat or another obvious physical clue. Some animals could theoretically go through life without anyone having a reason to investigate whether genetically distinct cell populations are present.

So while Dante's case is clearly unusual, claims such as "one in a million" or "the world's rarest dog" would not be justified by the evidence reviewed here.

Does Being a Chimera Affect Dante's Health?

This part of the story deserves particular caution.

Neihoff told The Dodo that she had been informed Dante might face a somewhat increased risk of autoimmune problems, while also saying that he had been healthy so far.

That is an account of information she received not enough evidence to make a general medical conclusion about Dante or other chimeric dogs.

Chimerism itself can arise through different biological mechanisms, and its medical significance depends on the individual situation. The available sources validating what chimerism is do not justify predicting that Dante will develop an autoimmune disorder.

For pet parents, the responsible takeaway is much simpler: an unusual genetic finding should be discussed with a veterinarian or veterinary genetics specialist if it raises questions about an individual dog's health.

Dante should not be diagnosed from a news story.

What Dante's Story Teaches Us About Dog DNA Tests

Consumer canine DNA tests can provide fascinating information about ancestry and inherited genetic variants, but Dante's case is also a useful reminder that biology doesn't always fit neatly into an expected testing pattern.

DNA testing involves obtaining genetic material, genotyping it and interpreting the resulting data. Unusual biology, sample-related issues and technical factors can complicate that process. Embark's own technical explanation acknowledges that chimerism can be one explanation for unusual genotyping patterns.

A failed test therefore does not automatically mean a dog is a chimera.

Nor should pet parents assume that repeating a failed test six times will reveal something extraordinary.

Dante's situation is notable precisely because repeated testing reportedly produced abnormal results and a closer look at his genetic data led to an unusual explanation.

For health decisions, consumer DNA information should also be considered alongside veterinary evaluation rather than treated as a diagnosis on its own.
