In a heartwarming twist of fate, a dog named Kane became a hero when he saved his 86-year-old owner from a brutal attack outside their home in Manchester, New Hampshire. Kane’s brave actions not only prevented what could have been a tragedy but also showcased the deep, protective bond between a dog and his family.
A Terrifying Attack
The day started like any other for 86-year-old Ned Tarmey, who was outside with his dog, Kane, in the backyard of his home. But things quickly took a terrifying turn when 55-year-old neighbor Donald Pierce allegedly broke into the family’s yard while naked and began attacking Ned.
According to Ned’s nephew, Jeff Tarmey, it all started when Pierce hurled a brick at Ned as he opened the door. "There was a fully naked man right here," Jeff recalled. Pierce then reportedly yelled threats to kill Ned while throwing rocks and pieces of lawn furniture at him.
Kane to the Rescue
Amid the chaos, Kane, a dog that Ned’s family had rescued from a shelter just a year earlier, sprang into action. Though Kane was typically affectionate and friendly, he immediately shifted into protector mode. Without hesitation, Kane launched himself at Pierce, holding him down and keeping him from causing further harm until police arrived.
"His master was being attacked. He went full-on fight," Jeff said, astonished at how fiercely Kane defended his owner. Kane’s bravery likely saved Ned’s life, preventing Pierce from continuing the assault.
An Emotional Reunion
After the terrifying ordeal, both Ned and Kane were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The following day, the two were reunited in the ICU, and the emotional reunion was captured on video. "Oh, do I love you, huh? What a good boy. You saved my life," Ned said, his voice thick with emotion.
Jeff firmly believes that if it hadn’t been for Kane’s quick action, his uncle wouldn’t have survived the attack. "The dog saved his life. Because if it wasn’t for the dog, then he certainly would have continued to beat my uncle and killed him," he said.

As Ned continues to recover, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary loyalty and love dogs have for their families. Kane’s protective instincts undoubtedly saved Ned, and his actions speak to the incredible bond between pets and their owners.

Meanwhile, Donald Pierce is facing multiple charges, including first-degree assault, indecent exposure, and cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear in court next week.
