Millie & Rosie's Great Escape: 2,000 Miles from Florida to Michigan by RV

There's a special kind of magic in loading up the RV, pointing it north, and letting the road decide the pace. For Waggle Places storyteller Becky Cook, this year's summer adventure did exactly that — a thousands-of-miles loop from West Palm Beach, Florida all the way up to Ludington, Michigan and back. But as Becky is quick to tell you, the real stars of the trip weren't the campgrounds or the sunsets. They were two four-legged travelers named Millie and Rosie.

Two Dogs, One Big Adventure

Millie is a seasoned RV traveler — the kind of dog who knows the routine and settles in the moment the wheels start turning. For Rosie, though, this was one of her biggest adventures yet. From the second they pulled out of the driveway, both girls slipped right into RV life.

Millie takes her co-pilot duties seriously.

Every campground meant something new: fresh smells to investigate, new corners to explore, and — whenever the map turned up a dog park — a gate to be first through. Millie made friends everywhere she went, including a Rat Terrier named Barney in Ludington. Rosie followed her big sister's lead, learning the most important lesson of RV life: every new campground can become home for the night.

Falling in Love with Ludington

If the trip had a heart, it was Ludington, Michigan. Daily visits to Central Bark Dog Park became part of the routine, and the girls loved every minute — running, wrestling, and chasing balls until they'd earned their evening rest. They tagged along on scenic drives, relaxed outside during family visits, and never once missed a Lake Michigan sunset.

Even the long travel days couldn't rattle them. Millie and Rosie made themselves right at home in the RV while the family logged hundreds of miles between stops — proof that with the right companions, the miles in between are part of the fun. (If you're dreaming of your own waterfront route, Becky's trip is a great reminder to check out these lakefront campgrounds to visit across the US.)

After a day at the dog park, even the best adventurers need a nap.

The Bumps in the Road

No honest RV story is complete without a little adventure of the unplanned kind. Early in the trip, the Cooks experienced a tire failure — the sort of moment that tests every traveler's patience. A little later in the journey, they celebrated installing a full set of brand-new RV tires (a milestone any full-timer will understand). And one especially peaceful evening found them camped in the middle of a cornfield, enjoying what Becky calls one of the nicest campsite patios they've ever had.

Through every mile — the smooth ones and the stressful ones — Millie and Rosie reminded the family exactly why they love traveling with their dogs.

The Long Way Home

As their Michigan stay wound down, the Cooks began the journey home, threading back through Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida — stopping at wonderful campgrounds and visiting more family along the way. Their route read like a love letter to the open road: Alachua, Ozark, Redstone Arsenal, Scottsburg, Riverside/Coloma, and more.

"The trip was a perfect reminder that the destination is only part of the adventure," Becky reflects. "The miles traveled, the campgrounds discovered, the time spent with family, and watching Millie and Rosie experience it all with such excitement made this RV journey one we'll never forget."

Traveling Safely with Your Own Millie & Rosie

Stories like Becky's are what RV life is all about — but every experienced pet-parent traveler knows the peace of mind that comes from keeping an eye on your dogs, especially on hot travel days or when you step away from the rig. That's exactly why so many RVers rely on the Waggle Pet Temperature Monitor to track the temperature and humidity inside their RV in real time, with instant alerts if things get too warm.
